IoT Is Harder Than It Looks

Building an IoT app isn't just mobile development with a Bluetooth library. It's unreliable connections, firmware edge cases, real-time data at scale, and users who don't understand why their device won't connect.

We built the Phyn app for Belkin—a water monitoring system that communicates with hardware in real-time, processes sensor data, and helps homeowners understand their water usage.

The hard problems in IoT aren't in the documentation. They're in the edge cases you discover when real hardware meets real networks in real homes. We've learned them the hard way.

ClearSummit has a rare talent of understanding what they're building and what user context it needs to function with. This fosters a collaborative environment where both designers and developers can push boundaries.

01

Hardware to Cloud

ClearSummit Process

The app is just one layer. We understand the whole stack.

We work with hardware teams, understand firmware constraints, and know how to debug issues that span the entire system. When something breaks, we can tell you whether it's the app, the protocol, or the firmware.

Most mobile developers stop at the Bluetooth API. We've gone deeper—custom native modules, protocol debugging, hardware simulation for testing.

02

Invisible Complexity

ClearSummit Process

Connection problems are UX problems.

Users don't care why their device won't connect—they just know it doesn't work. We design connection flows that guide users through setup, handle failures gracefully, and give them confidence that everything is working.

The Phyn setup flow handles Wi-Fi provisioning, Bluetooth pairing, and cloud registration. Users complete it in minutes without understanding the complexity underneath.

ClearSummit creates elegant solutions to challenges we threw at them with a minimal learning curve. They have a rare talent of understanding what they're building.

Our Methodology

How We Work

1

Understand the Hardware

We start by understanding your device, protocols, and firmware capabilities. What data does it expose? What commands can it receive? What are the constraints?

2

Protocol Design

If you need custom communication protocols, we design them. If you have existing protocols, we implement them reliably. Either way, we handle the edge cases.

3

Build the App

React Native when cross-platform makes sense, native when hardware performance requires it. We build the connection layer, data processing, and user interface together.

4

Test with Real Hardware

Simulators aren't enough for IoT. We test with real devices, real networks, and real failure conditions. We find the problems before your users do.

Is This Right for You?

We're a good fit if: You have hardware that needs a mobile app. You need real-time data processing and visualization. You want a team that understands both mobile and hardware.

We're not a good fit if: You need firmware development (we work with firmware teams, not as firmware teams). You want the cheapest contractor to wrap a Bluetooth library.
